- becky chambers, a psalm for the wild-built
as the new year begins, i’m thinking about all of the times i’ve uncovered myself. through the years, i’ve revealed myself to myself over and over. i am a flower in eternal bloom.
i am endlessly hungry for authenticity.
there’s something that happens when the days grow short and the nights long—something ancient that wakes within us all, welcoming the return of the light and the promise of a new year and new opportunities.
i was born in the year of the snake. it’s no wonder i’m constantly shedding my skin. discovering what’s underneath.
i wasn’t always like this, but i spent too long being the version of myself that others wanted me to be. when i finally learned to sift through the noise enough to begin finding glimmers of who i wanted to be, it felt like taking a deep breath. it felt like coming home.
i’ve learned there is a truth that lives inside of us, gnawing away at us. once we speak that truth, we begin to see the entire world differently. suddenly, there is no more pain. no more nerves. only truth.
you are free.
what could the world be like, if we all revealed our truths? if we all released the thing that’s inside of us?
what would the world be like, if we all felt safe enough to be free?
who would you be, if you let go of the expectations others have for you? if you were really, truly you?
the walls have been crumbling down around us for years, revealing the world for what it really is. why shouldn’t our own walls come down as well, that we may better bare our teeth against those who stand in our way?
that we may better see each other — and forge genuine connections in the process?
i am asking you to see me as i am rather than who you think i should be. i am asking you to see yourself as who you are. to find that self that lives deep in the heart of you, that self that no one else can be. to courageously step into the light. to show me — to show everyone — who you are.
i am asking you to be brave, not just for me, or even for you, but for all of us.
stay soft, stay unfolding.
